The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team

Patrick Lencioni, Ultimate Success Quotes

Patrick Lencioni

Patrick Lencioni has written a potent leadership fable that dramatically illustrates 5 dysfunctions of a team and the negative results this creates in a business.

The lead protagonist is a newly hired CEO, Kathryn Peterson. Brought on board to revive a flagging startup, Kathryn must work with the recently demoted former CEO and a team of executives who have developed negative and unprofessional habits. The climate is one of back-stabbing and political manipulations.

Although Kathryn’s background is not in the tech industry, her plan for turning them around is a powerful match. The team will be surprised by her vigorous, yet respectful approach in addressing these 5 fundamental attributes:

  1. Absence of Trust
  2. Fear of Conflict
  3. Lack of Commitment
  4. Unwillingness to Hold One Another Accountable
  5. Inattention to Results

According to Lencioni, each dysfunction is the catalyst for the next. Absence of trust directly causes fear of conflict, which produces lack of commitment, and so on. Lencioni establishes the connections clearly and reasonably. His book is crafted as a story wherein the points are illustrated by the actions of the characters as opposed to a straight ‘how to’ book. It’s a powerful technique and the individuals come alive in the various scenarios Lencioni describes for us.

I chose the audiobook from Audible and found it very easy to listen to and understand. I appreciated how vivid the characters were and the narrator was pleasing. The principles described in this tale are focussed on executive teams, but I can see applications for any area of life.
