Coco Chanel

The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.

A girl should be two things: who and what she wants.

Coco Chanel

Renowned for her little black dress and the iconic Chanel suit, Coco was born to very poor circumstances. After her mother’s death, she was sent by her peddler father to live in an orphanage where the nuns taught her to sew. This early adversity became the font from which her success flowed. In her biography, she shares that her clothing design career began when she took an old jersey and fashioned it into a dress to keep herself warm on a cold Deauville day. When others saw the dress and asked where they could find one, she offered to make them, and never looked back.

She believed that comfort was a top priority in fashion and her designs were much freer than the convention of the time. She is credited with releasing women from the typical restrictive, corseted type of clothing of that era.
