Extraordinary Vision

conviction - a great oak started as 2 nuts who stood their ground

Available at AllPosters

Every great oak tree started out as a couple of nuts who stood their ground.

They Were Nuts

I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t regret it, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not trying.

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon

He was nuts to want to sell every book in print online. The experts told Jeff Bezos to start small, to limit Amazon’s offerings, and to exclude less popular genres.  He stood his ground and ignored them. He created a company known for having everything available and having this identity from the start is very likely what made it the wild success that it is today.

A company is stronger if it is bound by love rather than by fear.

Herb Kelleher

He was nuts to bring humor and love into corporate policy making. Herb Kelleher started Southwest Airlines based upon many radical principles. Experts in the business of business believed that serious, no-funny-business, maintain-your-decorum rules were the true key to a successful corporation. Herb bucked the trend and Southwest is now a model for innovative business success that many wish to emulate.

You do whatever it takes to make things happen. That’s the only thing that works.

Estella Pyfrom, Estella’s Brilliant Bus

She’s nuts. Estella Pyfrom has invested an enormous amount of her pension from her 48+ year career in education in her project, Estella’s Brilliant Bus. If she had cared to ask the experts, no doubt they would have said, “Don’t risk it.” Fortunately for Palm Beach County families, she didn’t ask.

CNN  featured the founder of this  “customized mobile learning center, designed to travel to communities and deliver services where service is needed,” as one of its 2013 Heroes.

What’s In It For Me?

You may not have a nutty idea or passion, but if you do, let these 3 nuts and many others like them inspire you to stand your ground, follow your path, and create something that’s never been seen before.

Here are 3 questions that may help you to discover what your nutty idea may be.

  • What would I do if I couldn’t fail?
  • What would I do if money were no object?
  • What would I do if I weren’t afraid of what people think?

To really maximize this exercise, take an hour or so. Write down your ideas – without judging them in any way. Sometimes collecting images and putting them into a collage is easier, so look around for pictures that express your feelings and ideas.

The goal of this exercise is to strengthen your visioning muscles. Don’t put pressure on yourself to create any of these ideas right away. Relax into the experience of allowing yourself to dream and be creative.
