There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.

Dalai Lama

Most often we think of the most successful people in the world as being unconcerned with kindness. That, we imagine, is left to losers, or those who are willing to give up winning for the sake of someone else. Thinking that success comes from the absence of kindness is encouraged from an early age. Think of the game of musical chairs. It seems harmless enough, kids walking around a circle of chairs and when the music stops everybody races for a seat. Only there’s always one chair less than the number of children and the ones willing to elbow and push their way to a seat win.

We (women) approach tasks from different perspectives. Our metaphors are different. We’re not as driven to “win at all costs” as most men are. We relate more to the common good than the individual triumph.

Denis Waitley, Deborah Waitley, Dayna Waitley, The Psychology of Winning For Women

This is one reason why it can be so difficult for women in the business world. The industrial paradigm says someone must lose in order for me to win. Fortunately, women are speaking up, leading more companies, and succeeding in the world in traditional ways while embracing kindness. There are also more men in leadership choosing the greater good over personal gain. They understand what historically women understood – if everyone wins, well, then everyone wins.

If all we do is spew anger and fear out onto other people, it’s completely ineffective.

On a personal level, it’s important to realize that kindness begins with you, to yourself. Once you treat yourself with kindness it will take less effort to treat others with kindness. This approach will also work in the other direction – when you are kind to yourself, others will be too. For those who aren’t kind, you’ll have a new awareness of the source of their unkindness. It will be obvious that this is how they treat themselves. You’ll also begin to experience how much more effective this is, because the negativity will most likely bounce off of you and will be less likely to slow you down.
