With self-compassion the most important step, actually, is to notice your own suffering.

Dr. Kristin Neff

Self-compassion involves being kind to ourselves when life goes awry or we notice something about ourselves we don’t like, rather than being cold or harshly self-critical.

Dr. Kristin Neff

We can learn to feel good about ourselves not because we’re special and above average, but because we’re human beings intrinsically worthy of respect.

Dr. Kristin Neff

In 1997, Dr. Kristin Neff broke from the mainstream and decided to research a field that science had never studied before – self compassion. Her bold move resulted in a decade of published studies which became her best-selling book, Self-Compassion – The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself.

It was during her final year of graduate studies that Kristin discovered Insight Meditation and Buddhism which inspired her to integrate the concept of compassion with the psychology of the self. She discovered that our cultural perception of self-criticism as a beneficial motivating force was, in fact, completely false. In her work Dr. Neff has proven that self-compassion is key to well-being and that it can be learned.

Dr. Neff dispels the 5 Myths of Self-Compassion in this article on the Greater Good Science Center website.
