To laugh often and much: To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson’s words are an excellent description of ultimate success. Approach your own journey to success by tapping into his wisdom. Examine your life and see whether these ingredients are the ones you are using to create the life of your dreams.

Don’t take the list literally, though.

If you haven’t planted ‘a garden patch’, look for your own version of a it, a place where you’ve made it possible for things to thrive and grow. Perhaps you haven’t begun. Take the first step and decide which ‘plants’ you want to grow. Where do you feel you can be of service, while fulfilling your vision of who you are? Maybe you don’t yet understand what you are here to do. Experiment with different opportunities – take a class, join an online group, or spend more time alone in nature. Watch to see what things bring you joy and do more of those.

Do take his advice to ‘laugh often’.

Laughter (studies show, LOL) improves immune function and cardio health. The old adage is true: laughter is the best medicine. Sharing moments of laughter also deepens our relationships and creates irreplaceable memories. Nothing to laugh about? Check out any number of videos on Youtube featuring babies laughing, pandas sneezing or whatever strikes you as humorous. Schedule a laughter break at least once a day.

Do ‘leave the world a bit better’ – in your own unique way.

Begin with yourself. Connect to a deeper sense of self-love and learn how to access the deep stillness within. This will radiate out into your life and your world. How you treat yourself determines how you treat others. If you want to impact the world in a powerful and positive way, it must begin with you. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Try writing a page of your thoughts every morning – don’t judge them, just get them out onto paper. This will clear the way to your inner silence. Listening to yourself in this way will leave more room for you to receive and give.
