We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change.

Sheryl Sandberg

In her second TED Talk, We Leaned In, Now What?, Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, shares all of the developments that followed the release of her book, Lean In.

The message of Lean In, that women can improve their success in life by acknowledging inner and outer barriers and removing those within their control, has impacted women in all walks of life.

In her book, she describes many legitimate external barriers that women encounter in reaching for success, such as being seen as “bossy” or “bitchy” when in reality they are behaving in the same way as their male peers.

She also counsels women to be aware that they, themselves, take actions that keep them from sitting at the table, literally. She shares stories of women, herself included, not sitting at conference tables with the men, but choosing to sit on the sidelines, or in a corner. Women are less likely to raise their hands, ask difficult questions, or negotiate for better pay. All of these issues are within women’s power to change, and Sheryl has created a book, a dialogue and a foundation to do just that.
