Live Your Life, Follow Your Passion

Mark Twain quote: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Mark Twain

It isn’t always easy to tell the future, but Twain hits the nail on the head with his prediction. Take the risk of leaving your comfort zone behind and discover new territory – within you. When you explore, dream and discover, it enriches your experience of the world, but even more, of yourself. Opening up to new choices and ideas activates underlying aspects of your personality and awakens places in you that have been hidden. You’ll have new eyes, and very probably, a new heart.

Decisions, Decisions

The best thing we can do is make the right decision. The second best thing is make the wrong decision. But the worst thing we can do is make no decision at all.

Charlie Kim, CEO of NextJump

There are times when making no decision is actually worse than making the wrong one. Those are the instances where you feel your inner adventurer calling and choose to look away. These adventures can be as unassuming as creating a course of study for yourself or joining an online coaching group, or they can be as big and bold as moving to a new place to start a new way of life.  In the book The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying, Bronnie Ware shares the number one regret of those who are on their deathbeds:

To have lived a life that was authentically theirs instead of what others expected.

If worrying about what others think of you is keeping you from making a decision to live life on your terms, then now is the time to “throw off the bow lines” and begin to craft a life that is truly yours.

Pick Your Passion

There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.

Nelson Mandela

People fall into 3 categories:

  • Don’t know my passion
  • My passion won’t pay the bills
  • My passion is my purpose

An important first step is to gain a clear understanding of what it means to live your passion.  Your passion is more than your favorite hobby, or strongest talent. Passion isn’t a what, or a how – it’s a why. The why of your life can be expressed in many forms. Don’t confuse the form your passion takes with the passion itself.

Spend time with your inner stillness, your uncensored artist, and your limitless student self. Practice daily morning writing, play with natural objects: sticks, sand, stone, etc., listen to a wise leader who is where you want to be, for 10 minutes each day. Engaging with yourself in these ways will gradually uncover the true nature of your passion and start you on a path of choosing how best to express it.
