Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.

When Persistence Seems Impossible

Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search For Meaning

The sources of our individual suffering look different to each one of us. Even if our troubles aren’t as severe as others, they can still be an obstacle to success. There’s no doubt that our lives will never be trouble-free, but is it possible to view that which we don’t particularly like about our lives as a path to experiencing meaning? Looking from this point of view shifts the energy that we give to the obstacle, and suddenly we become empowered. Suddenly, persistence IS possible.

There are many ways to talk about meaning in life and how to live a meaningful life. We may see ourselves experiencing meaning through service to others, nurturing empowered children, achieving in business, or being loved. What brings meaning to your life may look different than what brings meaning to mine.  The common characteristic is that meaning brings empowerment.

What A Why Can Do

Those who have a ‘why’ to live, can bear with almost any ‘how’.

Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search For Meaning

Persistence not only leads to success….success is impossible without it. The important element is to discover, within yourself, your values, your desires, and your goals. Knowing these things is key to learning how to succeed in our lives.  Self-knowledge is the granite foundation from which we can persist.

Your Path To Success

Take some time to write out why you persist in the face of obstacles in your life. It may be as simple as getting to work on time, or completing a particularly difficult task. It isn’t the size of the obstacle that makes it valuable – it’s in learning the process of finding meaning and choosing to ….

P.S. – what do you think of the idea that today’s problem is tomorrow’s opportunity?
