The Best Kind of Goals Give You UMPH

You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are.

Fred Rogers

Setting goals is all about making choices, because Mr. Rogers is right – we don’t have time for everything. Powerful goals come from a deep sense of self. You wake up excited by them and taking the steps to achieve them makes you feel good about yourself. Feel, not think. The UMPH is that sensation, call it joy, happiness, gratitude, excitement or fulfillment, that signals that we are on the right path. If you are working toward goals that don’t create the UMPH, it’s time to shake ’em out and take a fresh look.

Our goals, the strategies we create, and the steps we take to achieve them are optimal when they receive regular check ups. Let’s say you have the goal of having fresh flowers at your desk every week. Each time you compost the old, faded arrangement and replace it with a bright and lively new bunch you have reassessed, either consciously or unconsciously, the value of that goal. The day it no longer gives you UMPH is the day you stop getting new flowers.

Powerful Goals Focus on Opportunities

Rich people focus on opportunities. Poor people focus on obstacles.

T. Harv Eker

Some examples are:

  • ‘I’d like to wake up happy about how I’m spending my day.’
  • ‘I’d like to experience ease in finding things in my home.’
  • ‘I’d like to savor quiet time each day.’
  • ‘I’d like to enjoy better communication at work or home.’
  • ‘I’d like to enjoy a sense of fitness and flexibility.’

You see? The goals that give you UMPH describe the state you want to be in – not the thing itself.

PS – Write down 5 things not currently present in your life that would make you happy.
