Do You See What I See?

Perception is everything

The story you make up for yourself is what your life becomes.

Joan Borysenko

Our eyes see, our brains interpret, our minds perceive. We see things all day, but if we have no perception then the information remains meaningless. When we perceive, we generate a meaningful interpretation that fits our worldview.

We create a story and that story is who we become.

Your story may create feelings of pleasure or sensations of pain, but it all comes from your own perception. This is good news – since you are the only person who has control over what’s in this story, you have the power to alter it.

Your Art Is Your Life

No great artist ever sees things as they are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist.

Oscar Wilde

Art isn’t just something you make, and being an artist is definitely not limited to the realm of painters, playwrights and poets. Once you accept the idea that your whole life is your art, you are free to invest all of your creative energy into exploring it.

Typically, the perception is that art is the product that an artist produces. The reality is that those whom we call artists explore their particular mediums with curiosity, a receptive mind, and an absence of attachment to an outcome. Consider what your life would look like if you approached it in the same way.

Consider your life as your art.

Four Directions

Four Rules For Life: Show up. Pay attention. Tell the truth. Don’t be attached to the results.

Angeles Arrien

In her book, The Four-Fold Way: Walking the Paths of the Warrior, Teacher, Healer, and Visionary, Angeles Arrien  shares wisdom from ancient and native cultures. The four steps detailed in her book encompass the totality of an artistic approach to life.

Show Up – Explore the medium that is your life

Pay Attention – Be curious

Tell The Truth – Have a receptive mind and be open to the truth of what you are experiencing

Don’t Be Attached To The Results – Release judgement about the outcome

The story, or perception that you hold about your life is formed by you. Choosing to be the artist of your own life opens up possibilities that may have seemed impossible before. Artfully crafting the story of who you are gives you the eyes to see those possibilities.
